Our Community Housing Development Organization wishes to acknowledge and thank Home Depot for their generous donation to Kenai Peninsula Housing Initiatives, Inc. (KPHI) for the purchase of playground equipment for our Terrace Plaza Play Area project. Our appreciation extends to Homer Foundation and its Tin Roof Fund who contributed to this project as well.
The playground area will serve the families who live at Birch Terrace and Terrace View, two new affordable housing developments KPHI is completing in Homer with the assistance of Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC). The play area greatly enhances these developments, providing a place for families to gather together and children to acquire important motor and social skills that are positively linked to learning and academic performance.
These developments are part of KPHI’s ambitious effort to end rather than just manage homelessness on the Kenai Peninsula. Affordable housing is one of the most challenging domestic matters facing Alaska and the nation. Recently, a needs analysis conducted by the Kenai Peninsula Borough School district revealed that 58 percent of our area families can not find affordable housing and are residing in substandard or overcrowded living conditions. Thanks to the support of individual donors and grants from organizations like Home Depot and the Homer Foundation, as well as mortgage financing from AHFC for both developments, KPHI is successfully making inroads in alleviating this situation with projects throughout the Kenai Peninsula Borough.
We are grateful to Home Depot, Homer Foundation and AHFC for supporting our vision of creating stronger communities where low income families can work to build a better future for themselves, their children, and their community. On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff and stakeholders, we thank them for making a difference.
