ANCHORAGE (AP) -- It's official. George Wuerch is mayor-elect of Alaska's largest city.
The mayoral runoff May 2 between Wuerch and Mark Begich was so close that neither candidate would declare an election-night victory -- at least not with several thousand ballots still to count.
The city's election commission said late Monday that Wuerch received 35,772 votes to Begich's 33,253 ballots. That came after the panel hand-counted thousands of absentee and questioned votes.
Absentee ballots are those cast in advance of election day or at a different location than someone's traditional polling place. Questioned ballots are those cast at a precinct other than the voter's home precinct and require officials to verify them.
