Officer shoots himself in foot

Posted: Friday, May 16, 2003

ANCHORAGE (AP) An 18-year veteran on the Anchorage police force was hospitalized Thursday after he accidentally shot himself in the foot, according to police.

Officer Paul Morino, 42, was recovering at Providence Alaska Medical Center, police said.

Morino was injured as he was responding to help federal officers apprehend a man who fled when his probation officer showed up for a visit.

Morino had taken the shotgun out of his patrol car to pursue 31-year-old Shelby Ward when the weapon went off. The pellets lodged in his foot.

Morino and at least six other Anchorage police officers responded shortly after 9 a.m. when a U.S. marshal asked for help chasing Ward, who bolted when the marshal and probation officer arrived.

Ward was later found hiding in a ditch. He was charged with violating his probation.

Ward was convicted in 1994 of federal drug crimes, as well as being a felon in possession of ammunition.
