Kenai Golf Report

Early bird catches the worm

Posted: Wednesday, May 16, 2007

April 28 was our opening date! Can you believe that? This was the first time, that I can remember, that the Kenai Golf Course opened so early. Not only did we open early, we wintered really well. Our greens are solid and are starting to turn green and the tee boxes and fairways are in excellent condition. What a great start to a golf season that will see many exciting changes and additions.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dick and Shirley Morgan for 21 great years as owners of the Kenai Golf Course. I would like to personally thank them for their help during the change of ownership process. I would like to thank them for their trust and confidence in our ability to continue the excellent traditions and quality golf that has always been present at the Kenai Golf Course. We are excited about this new adventure and look forward to all the challenges during the coming years. Debbie and I will continue those traditions and will do our best to improve the golf course each and every year. Thank you Dick and Shirley. We look forward to your continued guidance and participation in this process. We hope to see you at the course often.

In honor of Dick and Shirley Morgan, our first major event will be the Dick and Shirley Morgan Kick-Off Tournament, scheduled for May 26. This will be an annual event to honor Dick and Shirley for all that they have given us over the years. The format and registration forms are available at the pro shop.

I would like to thank Carol Morgan for her help during this time of change. She was always willing to answer questions and to make helpful suggestions. Thank you, Carol! We hope to see you on the course soon.

Speaking of the pro shop, it was completely remodeled over the winter. We encourage everyone to drop by and check out our new big-screen TV, our new indoor putting green and all the new products in the pro shop. Just drop by and say hello to the new pro shop manager, Debbie Griffin, and to Ron Goecke. Ron spent two-and-a-half months working with me to remodel the pro shop. Without his help and advice, many things would not have been completed until much later. Thank you Ron, for all that you have done. I am looking forward to future projects with you.

Speaking of future projects, over the next couple of years, we will be creating a new short game practice area, complete with a new green and practice sand traps. The layout will be designed for 50 to 60-yard shots and will be located on the right side of the present driving range. Work will begin in the next couple of months, beginning with the clearing of the wooded area. We look forward to this exciting new addition. Take a look at the area and make suggestions as we proceed. I am looking forward to hearing from you. I would like to thank the Kenai Golf Association for helping support this project.

Don Moock, our returning teaching professional, is off and running with exciting programs. Our first clinic will be the Women’s Golf Clinic on May 29-31 from 6:30-8 p.m. The cost of the clinic is $50. The first day will concentrate on pre-swing stance and balance. The second day will concentrate on in-swing principles with good balance and the third day will center on the full swing, the short-game swing and putting. Don states, “My goal is for golf to become a lifelong game that is fun and enjoyable for you.” Sign up at the pro shop.

The next major clinic is for the Juniors on June 4-7. Enrollment is limited to the first 16 students and is open to all levels of ability. The clinic will be held from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. each day. Sign up at the pro shop. Hook-A-Kid-On-Golf is scheduled for June 11-15. More events will follow. As you can see, Don will be a busy person in the coming months. For more details, call 283-7500 or simply drop by the pro shop. Thank you Don for your continued hard work and dedication to providing learning experiences for us all.

The new executive golf course has been designed and will be ready for play soon. This course was designed by Don Moock and Dale Sandahl. You will be able to play this exciting course at any time. It was designed for family and junior play as well as for more seasoned golfers that want to work on their short game skills. In the future, we will have tournaments on the executive course. Thank you Don and Dale for all your hard work on this project. Everyone is excited about this new course. Check at the pro shop for more details and tee times.

Men’s night will begin Thursday at 6 p.m. We are looking forward to the start of this program. Barry Jackman will, again, be organizing this event. A variety of different formats will be established for this event, including play on our new executive course. If you have any ideas, please contact Barry or Gordon at the course. See you on Thursday.

The 2007 Kenai Cup will get underway in June. A new and exciting format has been established. Entry forms are due in the pro shop by May 31. For more information, please contact Gary Katison at 252-9061.

Couples’ night and ladies’ night are in the process of getting organized. If you would like to participate in these programs, please contact the pro shop.

We are continuing the process, started last year, of clearing many areas on the golf course. You will notice the changes on most all the holes on the golf course. Our goal is to clean up all around the greens by thinning trees that block sunlight from our greens. We will continue this process the entire golf season.

You will also notice that our greens have been enlarged on most holes. As always, I am open to suggestions.

As you can see, we are ready for the coming season. The course is in excellent condition and will only get better. Drop by and see the exciting new changes. Have a great golf season. See you on the course.
