Cook Inlet Academy proved bigger isn't necessarily better.

Cook Inlet Academy's Cara Davidson competes in the shot put Saturday.

With just five competitors, CIA captured the girls Region II team title Saturday at Nikiski. Heritage Christian edged out Su Valley by three points to win the boys title. Grace Christian won the Region III/1-2-3A girls team title and Anchorage Christian Schools won the boys crown. Both meets were held simultaneously at Nikiski High School.

Sadie Arneson, Megan Bauder, Lauren Bauder, Cara Davidson and Ariana Tieaskie combined for CIA's 105 points. Su Valley's girls were second with 63 points.

Megan Bauder took first place in three individual events -- the 100-meter hurdles, 400 and long jump -- and was part of the winning 400 relay team, along with Arneson, Davidson and Lauren Bauder.

"I'm superexcited," Megan said. "It's an awesome way to start out my freshman year of track."

Megan said she did not expect to rack up four wins at the region meet.

"She's a talented athlete," CIA track coach Drew Dickson said. He said Megan's mixture of natural athleticism and competing in different sports enables her to succeed in a variety of events.

The top finisher from each region is joined by the next best four statewide times for individual events at the 1-2-3A state meet in Fairbanks next week. The top finishers from each region finals and the next best 12 times statewide qualify for Class 4A individual events. The top relay team and the next best four times qualify for state for all relays and all classifications.

Arneson took first in the 100 and 200 and second in the triple jump. Lauren took second in the long jump and Davidson won the discus.

Ninilchik's Brianna Goins took firsts in the high jump and triple jump. She was also named best female field athlete for Region II.

Seldovia's girls team was given the sportsmanship award.

On the boys side, CIA's Josh Holly won the 3,200, 1,600 and 800.

"I'm happy with this meet," he said. "I wanted to leave it all (on the track) and just have fun, too."

Out of his three races, Holly said his 1,600 was the best.

"My mile felt way good today," he said. "I still had more in the tank."

Holly said the meet was a good chance to see the 3A runners and get a look at his competition for state.

Ninilchik's Dillon Covey won both hurdle events and Scott Goins took first in the triple jump.

On the girls 1-2-3A Region III side, Seward's Allison Barnwell won the 800, 1,600, 3,200 and was part of the winning 3,200 relay team with Kristina Atherton, Maggie Herbert and Kelley Sefton. Barnwell was named female athlete of the meet for Region III.

"That's pretty awesome," Barnwell said of her four victories. "For qualifying, this is it. I knew I had to qualify."

Barnwell, a senior, missed her junior year of track because she was studying abroad in Portugal. Both Barnwell and her coach, Lori Krier, who was named boys coach of the year, worried she might not get back to her previous form. Barnwell's performances Friday and Saturday cleared any of those doubts.

"She works hard," Krier said. "She's always encouraging (the team)."

Barnwell, a former student in Krier's English class and Seward's co-validictorian, is the same on the track as she is in the classroom, Krier said.

"She exhibits in track the same type of goal-setting, hard work she exhibits in the classroom," she said.

Barnwell said she's familiar with most of the runners, which helped her plan her races for the region meet.

"I consider myself a pretty mental runner," she said.

Barnwell said she always has a strategy for her races. But the 800 is more difficult to plan for because of the short distance, she said.

"It's a sprint," Barnwell said. "They call it a run, but it's a sprint."

Nikiski's Kassi Johnson took first in the shot put. Her teammate Megan Hansen was second. Johnson placed second in the discus and Hansen placed third.

On the boys Region III/1-2-3A side, Grace's Jacob Kirk won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. He was also part of the winning 1,600 relay team.

Seward's 400 relay team of Jesse Atherton, Jacob Willis, Evan Pullins and Jeff Buchanan placed first. Atherton, Jeff Buchanan, Willis and Jared Lindquist won the 800 relay. Lindquist placed second in the long jump and Pullins won the discus.

Andrew Buchanan, Brett Chase, Andrew Arnold and Jacob Marshall took second in the 1,600 relay for Seward. The 3,200 relay of Andrew Buchanan, Chase, Austin Gillespie and Lindquist also finished second.

Chase placed second in the 800 and Andrew Buchanan was second in the 400.

Krier said she's hopeful that 19 of the 26 athletes on her team will earn a trip to state.

"All the kids have been PRing," she said. "They've had good races, good throws, good jumps."
