Description: The Challenger Learning Center of Alaska is offering a variety of workshops and camps as part of its Summer Youth Science and Technology Program.

Workshops for students 6-8 years old will be on Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. at the center, 9711 Kenai Spur Highway. Cost is $25 each. The schedule includes:

June 11: 3,2,1 Blastoff! (rocketry).

June 18: Stir, Fizz & Pop (chemistry).

June 25: Radical Robots (robot design).

July 16: Up, Up & Away (introduction to flight).

July 30: Future Builders (engineering).

Aug. 13: Wacky Weather (forecasting).

Workshops for students 9-12 years old will be on Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the center. Cost is $30 each. The schedule includes:

June 13: Air Rockets (rocketry).

June 20: Chemical De-tectives (forensic science).

June 27: Mars Robots (robotix).

July 18: Ready for Takeoff (models and pilots).

Aug. 1: Master Builders (design ideas).

Aug. 15: What am I saying? (teamwork).

The camp schedule for Kenai is as follows:

Rocketeers Camp

Description: This is an introduction to rocket making and launching. Students will assemble rockets, including homemade and kit models. Testing and tracking of the rockets will be conducted.

Ages: 8-11 years old. Dates: June 3-6. Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost: $250

Space Camp

Students will study as NASA astronauts. The history of the space program will be reviewed including rocketry, flight and working with micro-gravity. Experi-ments with neutral buoyancy will be conducted at a local pool. The last day of camp will feature a simulated space mission!

Ages: 10-13 years old.

Dates: July 8-12.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost: $300.

Cleared for Takeoff

Description: Students will study the theory of flight with models and flight simulators. A field trip is planned to local airports for radio control flying.

Ages: 10-14 years old.

Dates: July 22-26.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost: $300.

Can You Read ME?

Description: This is an introduction to the theory of radio and broadcast networks with hands-on application. Messages will be sent and received from around the world with voice, digital and Morse code using high frequency, VHF and UHF bands. Satellite link-ups and antenna work will be completed.

Ages: 9-12 years old

Dates: Aug. 6-8.

Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost: $200.

Registration for camps is due two weeks prior to camp date.
