Phyllis Halstead guided by students' best interests

Posted: Monday, May 17, 2004

What a delight it was to read your recent article about Phyllis Halstead's role at Kenai Alternative High School. She deserves every word of praise and recognition and more.

It was my privilege to work with her for five years at the school, and I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful and valuable she is there. She personifies the school and its philosophy and makes it a reality and a success on a daily basis. She has been a positive influence in the lives of hundreds of students in the years she has served there. She is the only person who has been with the school in all the years of its existence and has provided a vital continuity in carrying out its mission.

In her multiple roles at the school, she has consistently communicated to the students her belief that they can be successful, and time after time, I saw students rise to meet that belief and transform their lives. No matter how formidable the obstacles, she has brought her love and energy to bear on the problems the students have faced and found creative ways to meet their needs. The students' success has always been her guiding principle and unwavering goal. She really believes in these kids, and it shows in everything she does. I cannot praise her enough. She is an invaluable resource for the school, the district and the community.
