Greetings from Kasilof.

I hope your week is off to a grand start. Activities abound for those looking for something special to do this weekend.

The Kasilof-Cohoe Cemetery is holding its annual cleanup day Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Everyone is encouraged to come and help beautify our cemetery for Memorial Day. Helpers are asked to bring gloves and leaf rakes. Afterward there will be a picnic for volunteers at Brock See's.

For more information, folks may call 283-9243.

If you'll be in Soldotna Saturday make sure to stop by the Peninsula Center Mall parking lot early to take advantage of the selection of trees at the annual 4-H Global Re-leaf tree sale beginning at 9 a.m. For further information, call Cindy Irmen at 262-9049.

Just a friendly reminder: Take note of the posted fire danger level signs around the peninsula. We should not be burning brush or slash piles, burning trash in unscreened barrels or flicking lit cigarettes out vehicle windows. It is just too risky.

More risky business: Bears have awakened and have been finding easy pickings at the solid waste transfer site in Kasilof. Remember to honk when you enter the site to deposit your trash. Folks are again being asked not to leave trash on the ground, not to dump fish entrails or other animal parts in the Dumpster and not to leave appliances, car bodies and parts at the site.

If this type of abuse continues we may lose the privilege of having our own site to use. Many thanks to the continued stewardship of folks like Slick Rea who regularly cleans up. And for those who help keep our area clean who I didn't mention by name, I thank you.

Sign up for donors, volunteers and participants in the Kasilof Public Library's summer reading program continues. The program is open to children ages 5-6.

Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m. is childrens story hour with Cohoe resident and library volunteer Amanda Chesley.

Also on Thrusdays will be a scheduled activity hour with movies and crafts is from 4 to 5 p.m. There will be a pizza and soda party for those who complete the program.

If a good book is on your list, look no further, as the library has a few suggestions; "Winners Never Quit" by Mia Hamm, "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" by Lynn Truss and many new large-print titles.

For library information, call 252-1120 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Kasilof folks celebrating their birthday this week are Tim Mycroft, Kathy Musick and Jenny Morris.

Having an anniversary this week are Vern and Nancy Kitchen, I hope you all have a great day.

Until next week, thank you to those who send in their news. If you have a Kasilof-related announcement, news or an event that you would like to see here, call or e-mail.

Until next week, count your blessings.
