The Soldotna Lions Club says a very special thank you to all the participants in the recently completed 2006 Peninsula Cleanup sponsored by ConocoPhillips. It is too early to make any guesses as to how much trash was collected from our streets and highways, but the roads are cleaner and that was the object. The Lions also want to say thank you to the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce for all of their help in distributing information and trash bags.
The Soldotna cleanup ending barbecue was held May 13 at Farnsworth Park with a very rewarding crowd of participants. Thanks to funds donated by the major sponsor, ConocoPhillips, the Soldotna Lions were able to have a drawing for the young people in attendance and gave away a pair of new bicycles. Mary Hauptman and Ehren Rickman, both of Soldotna, were the winners. The Soldotna Police Department Bike Safety Program provided each with a new helmet.
Also, the Lions were able to award $250 to the winners of the group participant cash drawing to the Kenai Peninsula 4-H. Boy Scout Troop 1616 of Soldotna won the second-place cash prize of $100. Congratulations to Mary, Ehren, the 4-Hers and the Scouts.
Lions everywhere carry the motto “We Serve” with them in their service endeavors. It is always exciting and rewarding to participate with parents, adults and young people who share our commitment to community service. Thank-yous go out to everyone who picked up trash. Our “home” is all the better for it. We hope to see you again next year.
