Rotary roses available

The Soldotna Rotary Club annual rotary roses scholarship fundraising drive begins today. Roses are available for a limited time at Sweeney’s in Soldotna or from any rotary member. For more information and a list of members visit www. Soldotnarotary.org.

Retirement receptions planned

A retirement reception will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today in the Kenai Central High School library for retiring teachers Liz Burck, Tom Burck and Susie Franklin; and a retirement reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday in the library at Mountain View Elementary for retiring school secretary Darolyn Brown. They are open to the public.

Basketball camp a slam dunk

The final Friday Night Shootout basketball session will be held from 5:45 to 8 p.m. Friday at Skyview High School in Soldotna. The sessions will include 45 minutes of instruction and one hour of organized scrimmage game time. Camp is limited to 40 players. Fair seeks volunteers

The Kenai Peninsula State Fair will host a work day from 9 a.m. until the work is completed Saturday. Food and drinks will be provided for volunteers. Projects will include trash pick up, roof repairs, making ramps, spreading gravel and putting sides on buildings. For more information, call (907) 567-3670.

Brain injury awareness walk set to take off

The 10th annual Brain Awareness Walk and barbecue will be held June 3. Sponsor sheets are available at the Independent Living Center, Bridges or by calling Mary Warrington of the Brain Injury Support Group at 283-5711.

Rowing classes set to stroke

The Alaska Midnight Sun Rowing Club will host learn to row classes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 3 and 4 at Mackey Lake. Participants are asked to bring a sack lunch.

The club will provide a barbecue dinner after each class. The cost is $85 per class. Registration forms are available online at www.alaskarowing.org.

Dog jog slated

Twin Cities Veterinary Clinic will host its third annual 3-mile dog jog or walk at 2 p.m. June 4 at the clinic. The cost is a $20 donation for either event.

Participants will receive a lunch and a bandana for their pet. T-shirts are $15. Prizes will be awarded to top places in the run in the men’s and women’s divisions. Proceeds benefit the clinic’s Angel Fund for sick and injured pets.

SoHi pool closes for maintenance

The Soldotna High School pool will be closed through June 4 for maintenance. It will begin its summer pool schedule and swimming lessons June 5.

There will be five sessions of swim lessons offered, most consisting of 10 lessons each and are 40 minutes in length. Due to limited space, preregistration is suggested.

Starting dates are June 5 (nine lessons), June 19, July 5 (eight lessons, $34), July 17 and July 31. Lessons are offered six times a day and are held Monday through Friday. The cost is $40 per session. Private lessons are $10 for 30 minutes or $15 for 30 minutes for two kids. For more information or to register, call 262-7419.
