Fire still not allowed

Posted: Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Permitted open burning and burning in barrels remains suspended on the Kenai Peninsula until further notice, according to a Alaska Division of Forestry announcement Monday.

Small campfires are allowed in established pits in dirt, sand or gravel areas, but the department cautioned people not to burn if it is windy.

The division's announcement also included a reminder to attend those campfires until they are out cold.

Last week, the division, fire departments on the Peninsula and the Chugach National Forest responded to 14 wildfires.

The fire danger is at very high or high.
