Posted: Friday, May 18, 2001

FAIRBANKS (AP) -- A man who tried to hang himself in the Fairbanks Correctional Center shortly after his arrest last week on an attempted sexual assault charge has died.

Stacy A. James, 37, died Monday in Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

Police arrested James on a charge of first-degree attempted sexual assault after a witness reportedly saw him follow a woman into a wooded area. The witness reportedly saw James throw the woman to the ground and start pulling her pants off.

The witness, who said he heard the victim yelling for help, called police and James was arrested and taken into FCC custody.

According to Bruce Richards of the state Department of Corrections, James had been in the prison for only 25 minutes when he tried to hang himself. When guards found James, they began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation and called an ambulance.
