Disabled veterans to meet

The Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 5 will meet at 6 p.m. today in the bingo hall of the American Legion, Kenai Post No. 20. A delegate report on issues of interest to members and guests and reports on upcoming concerns to veterans are the scheduled topics. It is open to all veterans. SoHi pool closes for maintenance

The Soldotna High School pool will be closed through June 4 for maintenance. The summer pool schedule and swimming lessons start June 5.

There will be five sessions of swim lessons offered, most consisting of 10 lessons that are 40 minutes in length. Due to limited space, preregistration is suggested.

Starting dates are June 5 (nine lessons), June 19, July 5 (eight lessons, $34), July 17 and July 31. Lessons are offered six times a day and are held Monday through Friday. The cost is $40 per session. Private lessons are $10 for 30 minutes or $15 for 30 minutes for two kids. For more information or to register, call 262-7419.

Rotary roses available

The Soldotna Rotary Club’s annual rotary roses scholarship fundraising drive begins today. Roses are available for a limited time at Sweeney’s in Soldotna or from any rotary member. For more information and a list of members visit

Habitat house groundbreaking set

Habitat for Humanity will hold a groundbreaking ceremony from noon to 1 p.m. May 27 at Lot 3, Cottage Circle in Kenai. Area dignitaries will greet the new family. Hot dogs and juice will be served. It is open to the public. For more information or directions call 262-7534.

Gun club members trigger meeting

The Snowshoe Gun Club will hold its annual members meeting at 9 a.m. May 29 in the assembly room in the Kenai Peninsula Borough Building. The agenda includes reports on lands acquisition, programs and coordinators, 2006 dues, by-law committee and 2006 land permit use restrictions; including range officers. Also on the agenda is the election of officers and directors. It is open to the public. A 2005 membership card is necessary to vote.

Water safety instructor class offered

The Kenai Central High School pool will offer American Red Cross water safety instructor classes from 8 to 6 p.m. June 1-4 (if needed) for people ages 16 and older. The cost is $150 and must be paid in advance. For more information, call 283-7476.

Golf tourney ready to tee off

The 20th annual Masonic Open Golf Tournament will be held at 8 a.m. June 3 at Kenai Golf Course. Registration begins at 6 a.m. The cost is $60 and includes dinner. Mulligans are available.

The tournament will consist of four-person teams chosen by the luck-of-the-draw on an 18-hole course. Door prizes and raffles will be held. Proceeds will benefit the Masonic school awards program.
