ANCHORAGE (AP) An Anchorage private school evacuated 900 students and staff after a homemade smoke bomb went off.

A 15-year-old boy brought a homemade smoke bomb to Anchorage Christian School on Monday morning, Anchorage police said.

The boy dropped his backpack and the bomb ignited in the school hallway.

The boy tried to put out the fire but the flames reached 2 feet high. The backpack fused to the carpet and engulfed a 3-foot section of the hallway, police said.

A teacher extinguished the fire as students and staff evacuated.

The Anchorage Police Department bomb squad went to the boy's house and recovered another bomb and bomb-making materials.

The boy said he learned to make the bombs on the Internet with ordinary chemicals and wooden matches, police said.

He brought the bomb to school to give to another student, police said.

The boy was charged with misconduct involving a weapon, a felony.
