Garage sale fundraisers set

The following organizations will hold garage sales:

* Our Lady of the Angels Church on North Spruce St., in Kenai will hold a garage sale fundraiser from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Proceeds will benefit a peace retreat for teens. For more information, call 283-9371 or 252-2795.

* The Nikiski Senior Citizens Center will hold a garage sale fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Donations are being accepted. For more information, call 776-7654.

* The Skyview volleyball team will host a garage sale fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Skyview High School. Donations will also be accepted and pick up is available.

Sweet fundraiser nothing to cry about

Shriners Vidalia sweet onions are available from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Kenai Masonic Lodge No. 11, mile 1 of the Kenai Spur Highway Soldotna, from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Blazy Mall in Soldotna and from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Safeway parking lot in Kenai.

Foster care to be discussed

A meeting to learn more about foster care and adoption will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at 145 Main St. Loop in Kenai.

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, Office of Children's Services, offers monthly Resource Family Orientations to give interested individuals a brief overview of the state's foster care and adoption programs and process.

FASD information offered

There will be a free community training on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Lighthouse Community Church in Nikiski.

Learn up-to-date information on FASD, and tips on parenting, teaching, and interacting with individuals who have FASD. Foster Parent credit and certificates of training available.

Swim lessons make a splash

The Soldotna High School pool is taking registration for swim lessons June 1. Children at least 3 years old may participate. Class size is limited. Registration is recommended. For more information, call 262-7419.

Self-defense class offered

Self-defense class taught by certified instructors will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. June 17-19 and from 10 to noon June 20 at Christ Lutheran Church on the Kenai Spur Highway in Soldotna. The cost is $50 per person.

Assistive Technology available

The Kenai Peninsula Independent Living Center has developed a demo center that displays different Assistive technology (magnifiers, screen-enlarging software and amplification systems) and other devices to enhance communication and/or low vision skills at its site in Soldotna.

Its goal is to give individuals with disabilities the opportunity to try out different technology in order to live more independently in their homes and communities. Also to offer tips and resources for matching clothes, identifying money or locating the temperature on the stove.
