Nikiski Lions seek community grouch

The Cook Inlet Lions of Nikiski are seeking the 2002 Nikiski Grouch. The contest will be a fund-raising election, where community members can pay 25 cents to cast a vote for their favorite "most cantankerous" neighbor. Individuals may vote as many times as they wish. All proceeds will go to the Lions community service fund.

"These here elections can be bought. Family and friends have been known to spend their entire inheritance and life savings to get a fellow or gal elected," the Lions wrote.

The election is open until June 15. The top five nominees at that time will be allowed to campaign at Family Fun in the Midnight Sun activities.

To qualify as the "grouch," nominees must live or work north of the Kenai city limits. To nominate a candidate, call the Grouch Committee chair at 776-7652.
