SoHi boys, girls gather momentum

The Soldotna girls and boys soccer teams finished off their regular seasons by gathering momentum for the Northern Lights Conference tournament, which starts Friday in Wasilla.

The Soldotna boys defeated host Homer 8-0 on Friday then topped visiting Seward 5-0 on Saturday to finish with a 9-1 overall record and a 5-0 record in the NLC Southern Division.

“We’ve been playing well,” Soldotna coach Jeff Siemers said. “Our defense is strong and our goalkeeping is strong. The momentum is just what we wanted heading into the conference tournament.”

On Friday, Christos Asimakopoulos had a hat trick and Blaine Carver had a pair of goals. Also scoring were Brook Carver, Anthony Griglione and Kyle Van Ryzin. Goalkeeper Dan Geller posted his fourth shutout of the season.

On Saturday, Blaine Carver had a pair of goals while Griglione, Brook Carver and Asimakopoulos also scored. Geller and Tanner Abendroth split time in goal.

Seniors Brook Carver, J. Mohorcich and Asimakopoulos were honored on Saturday.

The Soldotna girls defeated host Homer 3-1 on Friday and took care of visiting Seward 8-0 on Saturday. The Stars finish the regular season with a 6-3-1 overall record and a 4-1-0 record in the Southern Division, good for the second seed.

On Friday, Emily Rohloff had a pair of goals for the Stars, while Holly Perkins added a tally. Claire Siekaniec scored for Homer. On Saturday, Jenni and Jessi Stenga each had two goals while Emily Rohloff, Perkins, Mikala Smith and Kelly Eshleman also scored. Becky Warton recorded the victory in goal for both games.

“It’s good to go into regions with a winning streak and momentum,” Soldotna girls coach Jimmy Love said. “Morale is good as we’re heading into regions.”

Soldotna honored seniors Lauren Senette, Whitney Ischi, Rainy Sirois, Mikala Smith, Jenni Stenga, Liz Rohloff, Eshleman, Jenna Fowler and Leah Swan and foreign exchange students Carole Hanke and Lisa Behrenbruch on Saturday.

Grace Christian sweeps Nikiski

The visiting Grizzlies topped the Bulldogs 6-1 in the girls game and 3-1 in the boys game. The Nikiski girls got their goal from Jennifer Lukassen on a cross from Hillary Bogard. The Nikiski girls finished with a 1-11 overall record and 1-4 in the Southern Division and did not qualify for the conference tournament. Seniors Jessica Bowlin and Clare Bennett were honored on Saturday.

“It’s a young team. We’ll be better next year,” Nikiski girls coach Tom Bennett. “Our two graduating seniors sure pulled the team along as much as they could.”
