An Alaska story: Living the dream

Posted: Friday, May 20, 2011

Ten years ago, my wife Maryna and I were living on the beach in Homer in tent. We had just come back from a two month mission trip out in the Bush. The Lord was really stretching our faith at that time of our lives.

We had five dollars to our name, hardly any gas in the gas tank and no jobs or money coming in. Our food had dwindled down to a few packages of Top Ramen, a can of fruit cocktail and can of beans. We both took a look at each other and said, "We need to really pray about what God wants us to do." We got down on our knees and cried out to the Lord from the bottom of our hearts. That is exactly what the Lord wanted of us.

That night, I had a dream and I heard a soft voice say, "apartment manager." I don't often take a dream as literal as it seems, but this seemed like it was directly from the Lord. I woke Maryna up and said, "How would you like to be apartment managers?"

First thing the next day, we went to the Homer Library and found a Peninsula Clarion and went straight to the want ads. On top of the help wanted was a listing for apartment managers in Kenai. I called the number and after a brief interview over the phone, the job was offered to us. We ended up managing a wonderful apartment complex for a year, we were blessed with a home and our expenses were taken care of with a good salary to save some money. We have continued to believe that God has a plan for our lives no matter where we live or what we are doing and have lived each day depending on the Lord for our needs.

Over the last ten years the Lord moved us around from Kenai to Seward and then to Sterling. We own a successful fly fishing business taking people fly fishing throughout Alaska in the summers. All things are possible because of two things we believe. When we pray, we know that God hears our prayers and the prayers of all his children and we work diligently at being obedient to the Lord of what he asks of us. We are not perfect. We simply strive to please the Lord and read His Word on a daily basis.

The Word of God says, "When you ask God, be sure that you really expect him to answer, for a doubtful mind is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. People like that should not expect anything from the Lord." James 1:6-7

Finally, "And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will be given what you ask for. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And the door is opened to everyone who knocks." Luke 11:9-10
