ANCHORAGE (AP) A Fort Richardson accused of denying their 4-year-old daughter food and water were arraigned in Anchorage this week.

Anthony and Juanita Kirkland are charged with first-degree assault and face a maximum of 25 years in prison if convicted. Anthony Kirkland is a private first class.

The Kirklands were not required to respond to the charges at a hearing Tuesday in state District Court. But according to court documents, Juanita Kirkland admitted she knew she was starving her child and Anthony Kirkland said he knew what his wife was doing.

District Court Judge Sigurd Murphy told the Kirklands they should not have contact with any child under the age of 12.

When the couple's daughter, identified in court papers as C.K., was taken to the hospital in February, she weighed 22 pounds half the normal weight.
