Police recover some of stolen explosives

PETERSBURG (AP) Police have recovered a small portion of the ton of explosives reported stolen recently from a local construction company.

Four boxes of explosives, about a tenth of what was stolen, have been recovered, according to Police Chief Dale Stone, who wouldn't provide more details.

The explosives apparently were stolen by someone who broke into a construction company's powder magazine sometime between April 17 and May 12.

Aside from local police, the theft is being investigated by three federal agencies: the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Department of Homeland Security.

The ATFE has said there is no indication the incident was anything more than a routine theft. That agency is offering a $2,500 reward for information on the stolen goods.
