Disaster declared for flood-damaged Salcha

Posted: Thursday, May 22, 2003

ANCHORAGE (AP) Gov. Frank Murkowski has issued a disaster declaration for the flood-damaged Salcha area.

Murkowski signed the declaration Wednesday. The action allows as much as $600,000 to be released for in disaster assistance.

Murkowski said he also wants state agencies and the Army Corps of Engineers to figure out a way to prevent similar floods in the future.

State officials said the flooding between April 29 and May 7 affected about 100 residents of the Salcha area. It inundated an area about 8 1/2 miles long by 2 miles wide.

The disaster money will be used to repair roads, work on an erosion-control dike, and repair some of the damage to private property.

The area has flooded repeatedly in recent years due to ice jams on the Tanana River.
