ANCHORAGE (AP) -- House Speaker Brian Porter will not seek re-election.
Porter, R-Anchorage, was first elected in 1992 and became speaker of the House of Representatives in 1998.
The former Anchorage police chief has been hinting for months that he would not run again. His last year as speaker was marked by sharp disagreements inside his Republican-majority caucus on issues such as new taxes and incentives for natural gas development.
Tuesday night, Porter said he does not intend to run for another public office and has no exact plans for the future.
''I plan to do nothing specific and everything in general,'' he said.
