Hazardous waste disposal dates set

The Central Peninsula Landfill Hazardous waste disposal collection times are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the following dates: June 12, July 17, Aug. 14, Sept. 18 and Nov. 20. Businesses must pre-register by calling Burlington Environmental at 1-800-478-9008.

Food bank seek items

The Kenai Peninsula Food Bank is seeking the following items: letter sized copy paper, silverware, re-sealable plastic bags (all sizes), sealing tape, Corelle soup bowls, scotch tape, plastic gloves (medium and large), plastic grocery bags, garbage bags (33 and 45-50 gallon).

Birthday bag items needed for youth ages 12 years old and under are: cake mixes, frosting, candles, plates, napkins, balloons and small stuffed toys. Items for youth over 12 years old needed are re-gifted gifts, seasonal items and large baskets. For more information, call 262-3111.

Pools announce schedules

* Skyview -- from June 7-Aug. 8, morning Lap Swim and Water Aerobics will be held Monday-Friday from 7:30-10:30 a.m.; Swim Lessons will be held Monday-Friday from 11 a.m.-1:55 p.m.; Private Lessons Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays from 2:30-3:30 p.m.; Open Swim and Lap on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays from 3:30-5:30 p.m.; Evening Water Aerobics/ Independent Physical Therapy on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays from 5:30-6:30 p.m.; Private Lessons Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:30 p.m.; and Organized Lap Swim Workout Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7 p.m. S

Swim lessons -- June 7-18; June 21-July 2; July 5-16; and July 19-30. Lesson times are 11-11:40 a.m., 11:45 a.m.-12:25 p.m., 12:30-1:10 p.m. and 1:15-1:55 p.m. Swim lessons are 40 minutes a day for 10 days at 50 a student (Mon-Fri) and private lessons are 15 for 30 minutes.

* Kenai Pool-- Lap Swim Monday-Friday from 6:30-8 a.m.; Piranha swim team Monday-Friday from 8-10 a.m.; and Open Swim Monday-Friday from 1-2:45 p.m.

Swim Lessons -- (Red Cross Certified Instructors) Ten days of swim lessons for 40 minutes (Mondays- Friday). Lesson dates: June 1-11 (Closed Memorial Day) Only 9 days of lessons; June 14-25; June 28-July 9; July 12-23; and July 26-Aug. 6. Lesson times 10-10:40 a.m.; 10:45-11:25 a.m.; 11:30 a.m.-12:10 p.m.; 12:15-12:55 p.m.; 12:15- 12:45 p.m. (3 and 4 year olds); and Private Lessons 3-3:30 p.m., 3:30-4 p.m. Need to sign-up for lessons in advance at the pool. Dimick, Maryott make dean's list

Soldotna residents Monica Maryot and Seth Dimick made the Spring 2010 dean's high honors list at Marietta (Ohio) College.

Dimick is an Economics major and Maryott is a Biology major.

Milliron honored

Max Milliron was named to the Dean's Honors List for the fall semester 2009 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and is a third year biology major.

He is the son of Steve and Randy Milliron.

Winners of Vicki Webb Nelson Memorial Scholarship announced

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary to the Jerry V. Horn Memorial Post 10046 in Soldotna is pleased to announce the winners of the Vicki Webb Nelson Memorial Scholarship Program for this year. High school graduating students with a desire to further their education were eligible to receive monetary awards based on their record of citizenship, leadership and financial need.

Local winners and their monetary awards are: 1st place, Emily Smola, Soldotna High School, $300; second place, Sadie Arneson, Cook Inlet Academy, $200; third place, Cody Krouse, Skyview High School, $100.

The first place winner's entry was entered into State level judging to compete with entries from Auxiliaries around the State for the $1000 scholarship award.

Swimmers make a splash

Soldotna Silver Salmon Swim team members who participated in the Junior Olympic meet in Anchorage this past weekend. The junior Olympic state championship meet is held every year in Anchorage for all the top swimmers in the state. Here are the results for the the SSS swimmers that placed in the top 8 for their age group.

Olivia Bowen - 15 and older: 3rd- 50 freestyle, 3rd- 100 freestyle, 2nd- 100 backstroke, 7th- 100 Breast, 4th - 100 butterfly, 3rd- 200 IM, and 3rd - 200 backstroke.

Kaitlyn Groleske - 13-14 yr olds : 4th - 200 Butterfly, 8th - 200 IM, 7th - 100 Freestyle, 8th - 400 IM , 8th - 200 freestyle and 8th - 100 butterfly.

Alex Weeks - 11-12 yr olds- 2nd - 50 Freestyle, 4th - 100 back stroke, 2nd- 500 Freestyle, 2nd- 200 Freestyle, 1st- 100 Freestyle, third- 50 Butterfly, third- 100 IM.

Other Silver salmon team swimmers that competed and also did great job are Chase Corona-Cain, Dustin Hunter, Rachel Davidson, Amanda Eby and Katrina Bearup.


Pedginski makes dean's list

Jimmie Mae Pedginski of Kenai, a junior at University of Idaho in Moscow, was named to the dean's list for the 2009 Fall Semester at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at U of I. She also was nominated for membership in Gamma Sigma Delta, the Honor Society of Agriculture.

Library fundraiser ongoing

The Kenai Community Library has a limited number of fireplace tiles available during the construction and renovation phase of the library expansion project. Forms are available at . Small, medium, and large tiles are available with the name of the individual, business, or organization engraved. Prices range from $500 to $5000.

Proceeds from tiles sold before June 30, 2010, will be used for matching a Rasmuson challenge grant. Contact Donna Peterson at 398-4335 for further information.

Book sale slated

The Friends of the Kenai Community Library are collecting books for its June 18-19 book sale. Book, video and DVD donations can be brought to the Kenai Community Library during regular business hours. Early donations will allow time for the books to be sorted into fiction, non-fiction, crafts, cookbooks, romance and other genres.

The Kenai Central High School class of 1980 is planning its 30th class reunion June 11-13. The reunion committee is trying to locate members of the graduating class. Luau fundraiser slated

The Soldotna Senior Center's Hawaiian Luau fund raiser will be June 19 at 5:30 p.m. A Hawaiian dinner, entertainment of Na Manu Olu and Pae Mae Ole hula troupes, door prizes, silent auction and outcry auction. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children under 12 years.

Perennial flower sale to fight cancer

Alaska grown perennial flowers are on sale as a fundraiser for Relay for life.

The sale runs through June 5 and will also be at the Relay June 4 and 5.

The Sterling Senior Center will host the following events -- Prime rib dinner June 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. The dinner will include 8 ounces of prime rib steak, baked potato, whole kernel corn or carrots, tossed salad, rolls, beverage and a fruit cup for dessert. The cost will be $12.50 for adults or $7 for children 10 years old and under.

The Senior picnic will be held June 25 at the Soldotna Creek Park. Seniors from the Kenai Peninsula will gather from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The center will have it's annual Salmon Classic Kick Off event June 26 at 5 p.m. Tickets for the event are $20 per person and may be purchased at the center's front desk and at the Pull Tab store. The event will include wine and cheese tasting hour, dinner, dessert buffet, door prizes, entertainment, and a No Host bar

In addition, Salmon Classic Tickets will be available for purchase, bid on silent auction items, participate in "mini raffles, and purchase raffle tickets for a hand-made quilt.
