VALDEZ (AP) -- An Exxon oil tanker with a hairline fracture in its hull sailed for Long Beach, Calif., Wednesday.

The SeaRiver Long Beach emptied the cargo from its Number 3 tank, which had a three-inch-long crack that leaked about a gallon of oil. The vessel was then allowed to head south, where the crack is to be repaired.

The vessel had to return to port Monday when an oil sheen was detected.

It headed south at 4:25 p.m. with a helicopter accompanying it out of the port as an added precaution, according to Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., in addition to the normal escorts.
