Brownie troop learns through service

Posted: Tuesday, May 25, 2010

I'd like to introduce Nikiski Brownie Girl Scout troop 545. They were asked how they could help their community this year in a Brownie Quest.

They chose to help the Kenai Community Library. They came up with ideas as to how to raise money and we decided to raise money by doing a Read-a-thon. It would serve many purposes, getting them into reading more, they could read up to 100 books for a flat donation or a per book donation. They also got the public more aware of the library needs and raised $551.00 in the process.

I then asked the girls how much more we wanted to give out of our cookie money and they said that they wanted to make it a total of $700.00 even so we also donated $149.00 of our cookie money. We went to the library and presented our check on April 6. We saw the blue prints for the future and looked for things we think need improvement.

We went to the City Council meeting on April 21 and let them know how we raised money and give our many ideas as to what we want to do to improve the library, we will use our cookie book displays. Mary Jo Joiner asked that we would make a presentation for the Council.

After such a wonderful turn out for that we then heard of a group called CASA that is a program for Native children who are neglected or abused and are doing a quilt raffle this year so we made a quilt that had the theme of families. Each girl drew a picture of something her family liked to do together or a family of other things. We also asked all other girl scouts to offer their time in making a quilt for the raffle too.

One other community service we did was to donate boxes of cookies to troops. We ended up with 84 boxes of cookies that we get to give to troops who don't get to receive these wonderful cookies otherwise. These cookies were donated by people in our community that wanted to help out the troops and the girl scouts. Then our girl scouts make postcards to send with them to thank them for their service.

If you wish to help with any of these community service projects you can contact the Girl Scouts Service Unit 262-7616
