Kenai Central softball splits with Kodiak

The Kenai Central softball team split a Northern Lights Conference doubleheader with Kodiak on Tuesday, winning Game 1 12-6 and losing Game 2 12-11.

Briana King earned the win in the first game, allowing seven hits on one walk over six innings. Hope Steffensen, who was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, hit an inside-the-park grand slam to deep left-center field. The Kardinals (5-5 overall, 3-5 conference) had three players who went 2-for-4 -- Sam Little, Carly Norvelle and King.

"The bats really came alive," Kenai Central coach Mark King said.

The Bears jumped out to a 12-3 lead and held to win Game 2, despite an eight-run fifth inning by the Kards.

Kenai Central cut the lead to 12-11 on eight hits -- seven singles -- before King was stranded at second base as the would-be tying run.

The game was called due to the 90-minute time rule.

"I'm proud of the way the girls came back," King said. "They came back strong that last inning. They never gave up and did their job."

The Kards host Skyview at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

SkyHi JV softball earns 1st program win

The Skyview junior varsity softball team defeated Kodiak's JV squad 21-6 in three innings at Skyview on Tuesday to secure the Panthers' first softball win in school history -- at either the JV or varsity level. This is Skyview's third year with a softball program.

"It's going to give them confidence," coach Steve Schoessler said. "Hopefully we can keep it going."

Schoessler said all but one of the players in his starting lineup Tuesday were freshmen. Victoria Oberts had the game-ending hit in the bottom of the third, a two-run double that gave the Panthers the win by virtue of the 15-run mercy rule.
