Peninsula Oilers swing into summer

Posted: Saturday, May 26, 2001

There's a diamond carved into the rough of the Kenai Peninsula -- it's called Coral Seymour Memorial Park, and it's home to the Peninsula Oilers of the Alaska Baseball League.

The Oilers will be back on the field this summer, looking for their fourth consecutive ABL title and another trip to the National Baseball Con-gress World Series in Wichita, Kan. The Oilers have won NBC titles in 1977, 1993 and 1994 and finished fourth or better in every NBC tournament since 1990.

Every summer, the ABL draws some of the top collegiate baseball talent to the Last Frontier. Oilers alumni include Rich Aurilia, Jimmy Key, Dave Magadan, John Olerud, J.T. Snow and J.D. Drew.

The Oilers will have a new coaching staff this season, headed by Aric Thomas, a member of the Oilers' 1993 NBC championship team.

Thomas promises to bring an exciting managerial style, emphasizing good hitting, base-running and fielding, that has been successful for his predecessors in the third-base coach's box.

The Oilers will open the season with the inaugural Kenai Hardball Preseason Tournament June 8, 9 and 10, a four-team, three-day tournament featuring the ABL's Alaska Goldpanners of Fair-banks, the Anchorage Bucs and Mat-Su Miners.

After the tournament, the Oilers have a 12-game homestand scheduled, starting with three exhibition games against Ukiah, a summer team from California, before starting the ABL regular season.

The Oilers have another exhibition series scheduled for July 7 and 8 when they face Team USA at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.

The ballpark is at the end of Tinker Lane off the Kenai Spur Highway in Kenai. General admission is $2; reserved seating in the covered grandstand is $5; and general admission for seniors and students is $1.

For more information on the Oilers, special promotions and ticket packages, call 283-7133 or stop by the team's office at the corner of Cook Avenue and Main Street in Kenai. The Peninsula Oilers are on the Web at www.oilersbaseball.com.
