DENVER (AP) -- U.S. Olympic Committee president Sandra Baldwin didn't wait long to resign after admitting that she lied about her academic credentials.
Baldwin stepped down Friday after a conference call with USOC Executive Committee members. She admitted Thursday that she did not graduate from the University of Colorado and never received a doctorate from Arizona State, as her biography stated.
''I think she did the right thing for the Olympic movement and herself,'' American IOC vice president Jim Easton said from Malaysia on Saturday. ''It's a difficult but honorable thing, rather than dragging this on any further.''
Baldwin claimed that she graduated from Colorado in 1962 and earned a doctorate from Arizona State in 1967. She said Thursday that she left Colorado in 1959 and earned her undergraduate degree at Arizona State three years later.
Baldwin also said she earned a master's degree from Arizona State, but never finished her dissertation.
