If you are looking for a dessert idea to complete your Memorial Day meal plans, I hope you will consider making pie. Of course, enjoying pie made from an old family recipe is wonderful, but bringing a new pie to the table, especially one selected as the best of the best by the 200 judges of the 16th Annual American Pie Council (APC)/Crisco 2010 National Pie Championships, is very exciting, too.
If you find the combination of chocolate, raisins, and nuts appealing, you might like to try the Best of Show pie from the professional division, a Chocolate Walnut Raisin Pie, created by restaurant owner Andrea Spring, from Bradenton, Fla. Fans of cheesecake will positively swoon over Lemon Swirl Cream Cheese Pie, the amateur division's Best of Show, created by Plano, Texas' Kate Stewart Rovner.
And, folks who like desserts made with Jell-O, will enjoy Mango Cream Pie, the pie that won the junior division's Best of Show for 14-year-old Devin Davis, who lives with his family in Plant City, Florida.
Each year, after the pie championship awards are announced, I try several of the recipes and decide for myself, which I might choose as Best of Show. This year, it was Rovner's Lemon Swirl Cream Cheese Pie, and I'll be making this one again soon.
