Clarence ‘Sonny’ West

Posted: Sunday, May 27, 2007

Kenai resident Clarence “Sonny” West died Sunday, May 20, 2007, at Central Peninsula Hospital with friends and family by his side. He was 52.

A memorial service will be held at noon Sunday, June 3, at the Family Moose Lodge in Kenai. Refreshments will be provided.

Mr. West was born March 17, 1955, at Marin General Hospital in Sarnafil, Calif., to Sybil June Small and Keith West. He married his long-time girlfriend of 20 years, Candy Kohniak on May 19 at their home in Kenai surrounded by their family and friends.

“He loved to work construction with his local Union Laborers No. 341. He was always thinking of different ways to construct projects. If anyone he knew or met needed help, he was always wiling to volunteer and do what he could. Sonny could also be a very quiet man and enjoyed just sitting in his yard soaking up the sun with his wife, Candy, not far away. That was the good life for him. Sonny could be the life of the party. He made friends everywhere he went. Sonny also enjoyed being close to his family and held each and every one very dear to his heart,” his family said. “May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sunshine warm upon your face. The rain fall soft upon your fields; And until we meet again. May God hold you in the palm of his hand. Love you with whole heart. We love your face off.”

Mr. West was preceded in death by his brothers, David and Michael; sister, Cheryl Brumlow; father; and grandparents, George and Wallace Shulte.

He is survived his wife, Candy; son, Craig Kohniak of Levenworth, Kan.; daughter, Theresa West of Hidden Valley, Calif.; mother and stepfather, Sybil and Dave Martinez of California; brothers, Wallace and Theodore West of Marin, Calif.; grandson, Sonny West of Hidden Valley; aunts and uncles, Freda Ramsey and her husband, Johnny, of Michigan and Larry and Marge Small of Redding, Calif.; several cousins in Michigan; sister-in-law, Wendy Kohniak of Anchorage; brother-in-law, Lonnie Brumlow of Kenai; nephews, Joshua James Brumlow of Kenai and David and his wife, Holly, and their daughter, Mariah Hernandez, of Kenai; and niece, Sonya Wynn and her husband, Ben, and their children, Anson McClue and Jessy Wynn of Kenai.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Clarence West Memorial Fund, 11823 Kenai Spur Highway, Space No. 57, Kenai, AK 99611.
