The Friends of the Kenai Community Library are collecting books for its June book sale. Book, video, DVD and puzzle donations should be brought to the Kenai Fire Department next door to the library. The Central Peninsula Garden Club will hold its annual plant sale on Saturday, June 11, at the Kenai New Life Assembly of God Church parking lot, across from the Challenger Learning Center in Kenai. The sale opens at 11 a.m. until items are sold out. Plants for sale will be annuals and perennials, including flower, vegetable, herb, and berry plants. A community garage sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 27-28 at Baker's Clam Shell Lodge, Mile 118 of the Sterling Highway in Clam Gulch. All are welcome. Vendors need to provide their own table, but space is free. For more information, call 262-4211.

The Sterling Senior Center will present a Cornish game hen dinner cooked by Larry Slichter, Rita Helleck and their volunteer helpers on May 28. Dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m., at a cost of $10 per person. The menu will include tossed salad, baked fowl, dressing with giblet gravy, cranberry sauce, baked potato, steamed carrots and a choice of bread pudding or tropical fruit cup for dessert. Only 100 dinners will be served, so make your reservations by calling 262-6808 or sign up at the front desk at the Sterling Senior Center. All proceeds will benefit the Sterling Senior Center General Operations fund.
The Ninilchik Volunteer Emergency Services will be hosting their annual Memorial Day weekend Pancake breakfast. The pancake breakfast will be May 28th-30th, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and 7 a.m. to noon on Monday. The cost is $10 for adults, or a three day pass for $25. Children 5-12 are $5 or $12 for a three day pass, and children under 5 are free.

Alaska Marine Safety Education Association (AMSEA) will offer a 10-hour fishing vessel safety and drill conductor course in Homer at the Best Western Bidarka Inn Conference room from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, with a cold water practicum outdoors. Bring a sack lunch.
This course meets the U.S. Coast Guard training requirements for commercial fishing vessels. It is available free to commercial fishermen thanks to funding from National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and a support contract for training services from the U.S. Coast Guard.
