FAIRBANKS (AP) -- Teachers have approved a proposed three-year contract with the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, the union for the teachers says.
The Fairbanks Education Association approved the deal at a meeting Friday, a statement from the union said.
''This contract provides an increase in compensation as well as improved language in the area of working conditions,'' according to union president Mary Cofer.
The contract provides for a 2 percent annual pay increase and boosts the cap on district contributions for health insurance by $20 each year.
The district currently pays the first $480 of monthly health insurance costs, then splits the balance with employees. Teachers now pay about $80 per month for family coverage.
Under the contract, new ''steps'' will be added at the top of the pay scale so experienced teachers can move up.
The school board is expected to consider the contract, reached last week, at a June 4 meeting.
