Homer students take final walk

Posted: Friday, May 28, 2004

One by one, the 87 Homer High graduates of 2004 strolled into the school gym May 24, shod in rubber boots, ratty running shoes and in some cases, nothing but bare feet.

As the night's speakers stressed, this was a class full of spirit and individualism.

"We are not dependent on others to excel," said valedictorian David Moore. "The ones who think they are crazy enough to change the world are the ones that do."

Ellen Halseth, a language arts teacher, glowed with pride as she addressed students she had taught in many cases since junior high.

"I met many of you as seventh-graders," she said. "You were much smaller, willing to line up in alphabetical order and sit on each other's laps."

These final weeks of school were a mix of joy and sadness, she said.

"I miss you already," Halseth said. "When you finally leave Homer High, we will follow you into the future."

Halseth doled out some sage advice to the cap-and-gown clad students. Don't wash white T-shirts with red underwear, unless you like pink. Don't write checks when there's no money in the bank. You can't live on Mountain Dew and pizza or can you?

Valedictorian Ellen Bauer encouraged her class to take time to follow their hearts, to think about what they really want out of life.

For many, she noted, the primary thing they want is to get out of a town where one of the top 10 news stories of the year revolved around a stoplight and to see what the rest of the world had to offer.

Seven years from now, however, she encouraged her class to pause quietly, take stock and consider if they are still on the right path.

"Silence is a powerful thing," she said.
