Soldotna seniors say goodbye with fond memories

Posted: Friday, May 28, 2004

Ask most graduating seniors what they'll miss most about high school, and you're not likely to hear many fond recollections of chemistry tests and English homework.

Soldotna's Hunter Sirois and Jon Verhelst are no exception. Following SoHi's graduation on May 26, the two seniors said they won't miss their schoolwork, but it'll be a little harder having to leave a group of kids they've spent much of their lives with.

"I'll miss the social life of school," Sirois said, saying his favorite part of high school was hanging out with friends outside of class.

Sirois and Verhelst, however, said they intend to keep in touch with many of their old SoHi mates and likely will continue to hang out over the summer despite the sometimes dangerous adventures they've had in the past. After their graduation at the Soldotna Sports Center, the two recounted one of their fondest albeit painful memories of growing up together.

"The time I wrecked my father's boat," Sirois mentioned as a particularly memorable highlight.

Apparently, the two were out on the Kenai River in Sirois dad's boat when Hunter somehow managed to nearly sink the craft near Beaver Creek.

"He almost killed me," Verhelst remembered, laughing.

The near-drowning turned out with an inflatable boat towing the intrepid pair to shore, a little shaken but pretty much OK. They managed to survive the scare and returned to school in the fall with one more story to tell in the hallways while passing their four years at Soldotna High School.

The duo's high school experiences echoed keynote speaker LeDawn Druce's comments to the 110 Soldotna graduates Wednesday night. Druce, a popular language arts teacher at SoHi, told the graduates the most important way to be successful following high school is to have a positive impact on other people's lives.

"You can be significant in whatever choices you make in life," Druce said. "It is by being significant to others that we will truly be happy."
