Volunteers backbone of annual track and field meet in Nikiski

Posted: Friday, May 28, 2004

Running, jumping and throwing was the name of the game on May 21. North Peninsula Recreation held its annual Hershey Track and Field Meet at Nikiski High School for boys and girls 9-14 years old. There were approximately 250 participants, which included students from North Star Elementary, Nikiski Elementary, Nikiski Middle-Senior High, Grace Lutheran School, Cook Inlet Academy, Sears Elementary, Kenai Middle School, home school, Girdwood and Anchorage.

Beautiful sunny weather was definitely a bonus, but the success of the meet relied heavily on volunteer support; volunteers are the real backbone of our program. Thank you to these volunteers who so generously contributed their time for a successful meet: Dennis Leckwee, Albert Parra, Karen Kester, Marion Nickelson, Jay Griffel, Shanette Wik, Emily Clark, Andie Alkire, Karen Calderwood, Donna Rooper,

Aimee Harrison, Carol Hall, Camille Taylor, Greg Hyatt, Stacey Griffel, Stephen Noble, Jenna Anastay, Heidi Covey, Kristin Peek, Dana Megchelsen, Linda Spotts, Meredith Akaran, Sonny Clark, Kelli Ping, Kenny Leaf and Amy O'Dell.

A special thank you to Lori Manion, Mark Norgren and Richard Kelso for letting me run field events during school in the PE classes, and thanks to all of the teachers and administrators who worked with and encouraged their students. We appreciate your support and assistance.

Rachel Parra, Recreation supervisor, North Peninsula Recreation Service Area
