Looking back

Posted: Thursday, May 28, 2009

As I reflect back, it is interesting to think about previous summers and events that have happened not only on the golf course, but in our daily lives. I have collected many fond memories and established and cultivated many friendships over the years because of Birch Ridge Golf Course. It is a vital part of our community and we are fortunate to have such a place that allows for individuals to connect and for our youth to cultivate new skills.

Many of the activities offered over the summer at Birch Ridge Golf Course would not be possible without the individuals who give their time, dedication and love. Whether it is the "Hook-a-Kid-on-Golf" or the "Tuesday Couples Night," it is accomplished by individuals volunteering their time and energy to make it happen. Thank you to all of you who volunteer for the various events and activities at Birch Ridge Golf Course! You are an incredible, wonderful link that helps make this a great place!

This past week there was a buzz of activity -- mowers cutting fairways and greens, tee boxes being upgraded and groomed, and brush being cleared between fairways. The latter seems to be an annual event and while there is not as much brush as previous years, at times it is still difficult to find that errant ball. The warm weather seems to definitely be helping the greens come back quicker. They are getting better and better with each passing day.

Men's League might need to be renamed 'The Kevin O'Fallon Night.' For the second week in a row, Mr. O'Fallon has taken home top honors. Last Wednesday night, playing an individual scramble, closest-to-the-pin honors on hole Nos. 6 and 8 were won by Mr. O'Fallon. Shooting a sensational score of 34, Kevin also was able to take home individual honors. Congratulations Kevin! Any time you want to play on my scramble team let me know.

Tuesday was busy at Birch Ridge -- senior's normally play on Monday but due to Memorial Day they carried over to Tuesday. Also Tuesday was the Tuesday Morning Ladies and Tuesday Couples Night.

Senior League had 15 players out on the beautiful, sunny Tuesday. Dave Kimura had low net with a 33. To quote the senior reporter, "Dave Stein got greedy and took both the long putt and closest to on hole No. 8." Ray Hamby took home the honors on hole No. 6.

Tuesday Morning Ladies amaze me! There are two beautiful ladies I hold as my mentor and role model -- Louise Schadle and Jan Stenga. I admire them dearly and strive to duplicate their skills both on and off the golf course. They still walk nine holes of golf and play a terrific game of golf. Thanks for setting a wonderful example.

Eleven ladies turned out for a great time on Tuesday morning and for the first time ever I was able to play with the ladies. With beginners luck and a wonderful partner, June Stuckey, we were able to take first-place low net. Second place was decided in a card-off and went to Jane Tongen and Shirley Johnsrud. Hole No. 6 was the site of the longest putt, which was picked up by Shirley as well.

Tuesday Night Couples saw 12 couples turn out to play the "four-person Alaska Scramble." The difference being, we had to use each players drive once and every team member had to finish at least one hole. A great round of golf was followed by great food and golf trivia provided by George Stein. Co-hosts George and Sue Stein teamed up with Dave and Sharon Keating to take first place. Dave and Sharon took first place last week, too. Living on the golf course has its benefits and rewards! Taking second place was the team of Lori and Charlie Weimer, who were paired with Judy Keck-Walsh and the Birch Ridge pro, Tom Walsh.

Remember, Hook-a-Kid-on-Golf begins on Monday, June 1 and will run all week.

Junior Golf clinics begin June 8. For further details either call the course at 907-262-5270 or visit the Web site at www.birchridgegolf.com.
