The Oilers have signed hot-hitting Garrett Wittels, a sophomore at Florida International University, to play for them this summer.
On Thursday, Wittels extended his hitting streak to 50 games with a single to left in the top of the third inning in a 7-3 victory over Western Kentucky in the Sun Belt Conference tournament in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Wittels is now eight games shy of tying Robin Ventura's record of 58 games set in 1987.
Wittels, who is getting increasing national attention each time he extends his streak, will try to extend the streak today as FIU continues to try and advance in the tournament.
Wittels is hitting .415 in 50 games with FIU.
