ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Gov. Tony Knowles spent Memorial Day helping dedicate a statue that will be added to the Veterans Memorial.
The bronze World War II rifleman statue was created by Cordova sculptor Joan Bugbee Jackson.
''This incredibly detailed, life-sized, un-named statue will forever remind us of the American G.I. in the battlefield, fighting with mighty resolve,'' said Knowles, who was the keynote speaker at the Anchorage Park Strip ceremony.
Knowles, a Vietnam veteran, also participated in a ceremony at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery in Anchorage which featured a flyover in the missing man formation by the Pacific Air Forces 3rd Wing, 90th fighter Squadron, out of Elmendorf Air Force Base.
