At A Glance: Capital Projects for the Peninsula

Posted: Wednesday, May 29, 2002

Despite the political chaos and inaction marking the end of the legislative session, lawmakers approved more than $1.28 billion for capital projects in fiscal year 2003 beginning July 1.

The Kenai Peninsula's three House districts did well, garnering nearly $28 million for a variety of projects ranging from water, sewer and road work to school and community center repairs, equipment purchases and feasibility studies.

In addition, lawmakers also passed House Bill 2002, a $236 million general obligation bond proposal that will go to voters this fall. It would provide $166 million for new school facilities and major maintenance projects in Bush Alaska; $61.7 million for University of Alaska campus projects in

Anchorage, Bethel, Dillingham, Fairbanks, Homer, Juneau, Soldotna, Ketchikan, Nome, Palmer, Sitka and Valdez; and $5 million for expansion of an Anchorage museum.

Another bill, if approved by voters, would provide $190.6 million in state reimbursement funds to cover 70 percent of any school construction bond

authorized by a municipality or school district and approved the Alaska Department of Education, or 60 percent reimbursement for projects not authorized by the education department. The money is contingent on voter approval of House Bill 2002.

Here is a quick look at the projects listed in the $1.28 billion capital budget for fiscal year 2003. They are listed under the state departments through which the specific grants come.
