ANCHORAGE (AP) -- In an article on the National Marine Fisheries Service's consideration of a possible critical habitat designation for the bowhead whale in the Beaufort Sea, The Associated Press incorrectly defined critical habitat.
Critical habitat areas are those that have physical or biological features essential to the conservation of a species and which may require special management consideration or protection.
A critical habitat designation could eventually lead to possible restrictions on the types of activities permitted in an area, but does not carry any restrictions itself.
The National Marine Fisheries Service has not set a timeframe for a decision on a critical habitat designation for the bowhead.
