FAIRBANKS (AP) -- U.S. Census Bureau numbers reflect the impending demise of Fort Greely near Delta Junction.
The base is scheduled to close in July but already its population has been shrinking in anticipation of that event. In 1990, the Census found 1,147 people on the fort; in 2000, there were 461.
The surrounding communities, meanwhile, have grown substantially. The Big Delta Census district almost doubled in population over the decade, to 749 from 400.
The city of Delta Junction grew to 840 from 652.
