'Dos Tierras'

Posted: Thursday, May 30, 2002

Eliz Olivella may be a familiar name to many in the Homer area, but after five years in Mexico, her art may look less familiar. Olivella, a former Seldovia potter, and her partner Jorge Pablo of Oaxaca, Mexico, are exhibiting their works at the Fireweed Gallery this month. The couple's work ranges from Olivella's sensual sculpture works of clay to Pablo's precise pottery and clay tile pieces.

Olivella said her latest works draw from "the nurturing feminine" and her colorful sculptures reflect "dreams, primal instincts, self-examination and acceptance as witness and participant in community, where ever that is."

Pablo's sculptures in clay focus on nature's palate as well as subjects of the earth and draw on the artist's experience with clay since he was 8 years old. Also on exhibit are a series of Pablo's Mexican-style bowls and vessels.

"Radiance" by Pablo is one of several muted-tone art works created using tile-like pieces.

Their combined show, titled "Dos Tierras," is on display at the Fireweed Gallery through June 5.
