Hero of the Week: Fast fire response appreciated

Posted: Tuesday, May 30, 2006

I want to express my most heartfelt and sincere thank you and appreciation to the Nikiski Fire Department for their speedy and expeditious actions in putting out a greatly dangerous and potentially disastrous forest fire that started in my neighbors yard. The fire was moving so incredibly fast and within minutes the dry grass was burning high and the smoke was billowing through the entire neighborhood and with the wind it was gaining fast ground towards our home and everything we own in this world.

Thank God, the wind was not as strong as usual and it shifted away from our home, however, mostly it was the fast and expert work of the great Nikiski Fire Department that averted great calamity and ruin.

Thank you to all the fire fighters in their heavy yellow suits, sweating and laboring to extinguish the fire and the smoking hot spots. I realized today ( May 22) how horribly fast a fire can move, my husband saw it move towards our property and the flames were roaring and hissing and sucking the air towards it with a great fearful roar, feeding furiously. If it would have not been for the Nikiski Fire Department we wouldn’t have a home left. How fast you can lose everything!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, it was so great to see your bright yellow pump trucks with the flashing lights lined up along our drive way!
