ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Elmer Rasmuson, former president of the National Bank of Alaska, has contributed $250,000 to begin a scholarship fund in the name of the University of Alaska Board of Regents.

Rasmuson served as president on the board for 13 years.

The money will enable the university to implement the Regents' Scholarship Program. The first scholarships will likely be awarded in 2001.

The board approved the program in November 1999. The program is open to University of Alaska junior, senior or graduate students who have demonstrated a commitment to civic leadership or service activities.
