Nikolaevsk, Nanwalek each recognize valedictorian among graduates

Laura's favorite subject is mathematics, but her school also has honored her academic achievements in Russian, English, science and social studies. She was the student council secretary, and her other extracurricular activities included volleyball, charity food drives and the Battle of the Books and Mind Amazes academic competitions. She has a scholarship to attend the honors program at Cedarville University in Ohio, where she plans to major in secondary education with endorsements in math and social studies.

Laura also received the Masonic outstanding student award. Her parents are Palmer and Bonnie Bailey.

Sonya Ash

Nanwalek School

Sonya is a member of the Nanwalek Sugpiaq Dancers.

She loves to dance and sing, and also likes to write and read. Her favorite high school experience is being able to be in her own community and not have to be sent out to another school, she said.

She plans to go to the University of Alaska Fairbanks to major in education and minor in Alaska Native languages.

Her parents are Marlon and Sally Ash.
