What comes to mind when you see a stripe, red or white?
A star floating in a square of blue?
Do you think of an eagle, with grandness and might,
Or a country dear, so dear, to you?
Do you see a child, with hand over heart,
Or soldier giving his life?
A historic fortress with battered rampart,
Or colonial boy playing a fife?
Do you see a farmer, bowing his head
As the well-needed rain starts to fall?
The Fanfare to the Common Man,
Or Babe Ruth hitting that ball?
When you see this flag so very dear,
Dear to you and me,
Hold it close and very near,
Then high for all to see.
Be grateful for all those who died,
Pray for those not as blessed as we,
And let your heart be filled with pride,
For this, the flag of the free.
