District books get good grades

The school district was awarded a certificate of excellence last week from an international school officials organization for their fiscal reporting.

According to Kelly Reisig, Kenai Peninsula Borough School District spokesperson, the KPBSD was one of 474 school districts in 32 states to receive the Association of School Business Officials International Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting.

This also marks the 20th year the District has received this award.

According to the ASBO website, the certificate reviews the accounting practices and reporting procedures used by a school district in their comprehensive annual financial reports and enhances the award winners' credibility among stakeholders.

Comment from an ASBO representative, which is headquartered in Roanoke, Va., was not immediately available on Thursday.

The award comes on the heels of some of the most intense public scrutiny the district has seen from Borough lawmakers regarding their finances.

Reisig said the recognition served as an outside voice vouching for their accountability.

"The award gives us a third party coming in and saying that we are going above and beyond in our financial reporting to do the best for our constituents and tax payers," Reisig said.
