ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The 3rd Wing at Elmendorf Air Force Base has won an environmental cleanup award from the Secretary of Defense.
The award commends the 3rd Wing for efforts to protect human health and the environment by cleaning up military sites in a timely and cost-efficient manner.
The base has 97 percent of its 84 contaminated sites cleaned up or in the process of being cleaned up, base officials said. Elmendorf was also credited for its strong working relationships with the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the federal Environmental Protection Agency.
The efforts of the base's Environmental Restoration Branch were recognized in a ceremony at the Pentagon April 26.
