Governor declares disaster declaration for Koyukuk, Nulato

Posted: Friday, June 01, 2001

JUNEAU (AP) -- Gov. Tony Knowles issued a disaster declaration Thursday for the communities of Nulato and Koyukuk, which have been hurt by recent Yukon River flooding.

The declaration allows money to be spent on assistance and authorizes the director of the Division of Emergency Services to involve other state agencies in helping the communities.

Homes in both communities are damaged from flood waters, and contamination from flooded sewage lagoons and fuel residue required 35 children and elders to be evacuated from Koyukuk. The public airport in Koyukuk and roads, bridges, and utilities in both communities have been underwater.

Major General Phil Oates, commissioner for the Department of Military & Veterans Affairs, sent a team representing state, federal, and volunteer agencies to the area Wednesday to help assess the disaster and arrange temporary shelter for displaced villagers.

Final damage figures will not be available until the waters recede.
