Fairbanks men asphyxiated in tent with stove

Posted: Friday, June 01, 2001

FAIRBANKS (AP) -- Two Fairbanks man were found dead Thursday in a tent at Circle Hot Springs, apparently asphyxiated.

Alaska State Troopers said a charcoal camp stove was found inside the tent with the two men. Troopers are not releasing the names of the men until they are able to notify family members living in the Lower 48.

Troopers were notified late Wednesday that the two men were overdue from a camping trip. They had set out on Saturday, May 26 and were due to return to Fairbanks on May 27.

Troopers flew by helicopter to the area Thursday, spotted the truck the men were driving and saw the tent nearby. Officers landed and found the men deceased inside the tent, said trooper spokesman Greg Wilkinson. A dog that was with the men survived.

Wilkinson said toxicology tests would be done to determine the exact cause of death.
